Black Bear

There are bears everywhere in Alaska. This is just a typical road-side shot of one of our furry friends.

You have to wonder how long that rock has been there, and how long it is going to stay there.

Up we go!

Destination: top of the hill.

I noticed an open gate along the road, and 15 miles later this is where I ended up. The road led to a fire lookout tower. It was steep, and lotsa fun. The view at the top was incredible, and incidentally there was a high speed wireless internet connection, too.

Cruise ship in Juneau

Why would someone possibly want to go swimming, outside on an Alaskan cruise ship?

This picture is taken from a mountain overlooking Juneau. We rode a tram up to the top, then I hiked (actually just slipped on the mud) down.

Menden-Hall Glacier

Outside of Juneau a few miles. And only certain tour companies can take you there all the way to the visitors center, everyone else get to walk a few miles.

Camping in the River

We spent the night sleeping in the river. Or sleeping in the truck parked on the river bed. Fortunately flash floods are not common in Alaska, otherwise we would have been in a high risk location!

I worked UO-14 that evening and got a chance to rag chew on the satellite. At one point I even worked mom on the D700 in the truck, and me with my D7A 50 feet away...

Self Portrait

This photo was taken late at night near Tak Alaska. We are parked in the middle of a river bed, and incredibly enough, the river was at the top of a big hill. I have no idea how that geography worked!

My Dirty Truck

We are about 2/3 of the way up the Haul Road. This section of the road was just dirt (and the last 200 miles were not much better ;-) ... visibility through the topper was non-existant, but it didn't matter. About 70 miles later the back broke off the toper and the view was fixed. The view may have been fixed, but everything else was covered with mud.

Haul Road

Ahh the "Haul Road" ... my favorite part of the trip. The road follows the Alaskan pipeline from Fairbanks up to Prudoe Bay. The scenery was phenominal, and road was awful, and the experience was wonderful.

It's hard to see, but those are plywood cutouts of christmas trees. The last trees were at least 100 miles south, so these wonderful specimems constituted the national forest :-)
